For the Caregiver and Care-receiver

Easy Recipes

  • Ingredients:

    • Boxed Cake mix

    • Ingredients for cake mix

    • Toppings (the more the merrier! Ideas: fruits, nuts, candy bars, sprinkles, etc)

    Directions:

    1. Bake box cake mix according to directions

    2. Decide together if you'd like to put toppings on before/after the oven (think about melting, textures, etc)

    3. Let cool before digging in.

    4. Enjoy!

    Tips for care-recipient involvement:

    1. Take your recipient and browse the candy aisle, the dollar store, or more for fun ideas for toppings.

    2. The cake batter viscosity will add resistance when mixing, becoming a strength activity for your care recipient! If too difficult to mix, assist with the mixing. Adding water will decrease the tension.

    3. Have fun with decorating your cake. Experiment by having your care recipient use tongs, utensils or fingers. This will utilize different skills and stimulate creativity.

    Tips for care-recipient involvement:

    1. Make sure rotisserie chicken is cool enough to tough, care-recipient can use hands or utensils to shred. Food-safe gloves can be used.

    2. Try hand-over-hand with your care recipient to assist with cutting veggies.

    3. Safely place a chair near the stove for your care-recipient to stir the pot, if needed.

    4. Have them be in charge of timing (but set a timer of your own, just in case).

  • Ingredients:

    • Choice of vegetables and proteins (For this one I will use potatoes, broccoli, and sausage)

    • Seasonings of choice (salt, pepper, Italian seasoning)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 400°F

    2. Cut potatoes and sausages into bite size pieces, pull apart broccoli

    3. Place potatoes, broccoli and sausages into a big bowl. Drizzle cooking oil and mix with hands

    4. Sprinkle seasoning to taste, mix

    5. Place potatoes, broccoli and sausages in a single layer on a baking sheet.

    6. Place in oven, middle rack, for 15 minutes

    7. When done, let cool for a couple minutes and enjoy!

    Tips for care-recipient involvement:

    1. Let your loved one choose what to bake, and what seasonings they would prefer

    2. If they are able to, let them assist with chopping. For some vegetables, such as broccoli, they may use their hands to tear big pieces into smaller ones.

    3. Tag team the work! While you mix, they can sprinkle the seasonings or vice versa.

    4. Allow them to place the ingredients in a single layer on the tray. They're maintaining their motor skills this way.

    5. Have them be in charge of timing (but set a timer of your own, just in case).
